The University of Ottawa was targeted by a sophisticated phishing attack, the Business executive scam. A fraudulent email account using the name of a uOttawa executive was used to send a legitimate-looking email to an employee. The employee who is authorized to access University’s financial systems was requested to process an urgent payment on an invoice before the end of the day. The attack was identified and prevented immediately; University systems were not compromised.
Security has become a top concern in universities. As hackers become more sophisticated, their attacks are more damaging and harmful to everyone. The University of Ottawa is not immune. Our daily reliance on computers contributes to the increased risk the organization faces and the likelihood of confidential or restricted information falling into the wrong hands. A framework for IT security risk reduction is truly necessary. In the upcoming year and likely beyond, we will be undertaking a series of initiatives to increase the protection of the University and solidify our wall against malicious attempts. This is on top of existing solutions and initiatives already in place.
In April, we will be strengthening the security of your computer by upgrading the Sophos Endpoint Protection tool installed on your Windows or Mac machine. It has new protection features that are important to have. This will be done automatically through the network and in the background while you work. You should experience no disruption during the upgrade period that may take up to 4 hours. Once done, you may get a pop-up message, asking you to reboot your machine
