Do you email, text, or call? How about all in one from a mobile office? With the Office 365 unified communications project, this can soon become a reality at the University of Ottawa.
Softphones are virtual phone system software mimicking telephone sets. You can use them on the device of your choice: computers, tablets, smartphones, they are all supported. You can make, receive, and manage your calls over the internet instead of using a traditional telephone set. All you need is an internet connection, a device with audio and visual capabilities, and a dedicated software.
A proof-of-concept initiative has been launched on campus with about twenty of your colleagues. They are using Microsoft Teams to make and receive calls. Voicemail messages are sent to their inbox.
Softphones are tools that support mobility and flexibility. You can take your business phone wherever you go. Never miss a meeting. Your Outlook calendar and contacts are synced up with Teams. You can organize and participate in video or audio calls and conferences. You can send texts instead of emails to one person, to several, or to groups. Also, you do not compromise your privacy as you can use two different phone numbers on the same device.
