Local Storage for Researchers
Research groups at the University of Ottawa can get 5 TB of storage for free on a NAS in our local data centre. Additional storage is available for a one-time fee of $1,000 per 5 TB increments.
This service in only available on the campus network and cannot be accessed from outside of the campus network. Drives can be mapped on the wired network. For devices on the wireless network, there is a web interface available as well as apps for iOS and Android.

Connection to the storage for Windows on the wired network
To map the drive on your Windows 10 computer connected to the wired network, follow these steps:
- Open File Explorer
- Select "This PC"
- In the ribbon, select "Computer"
- Click on "Map network drive"
- Choose any drive letter you want
- Type in the location of the share. This will have the form of \\storage.rdc.uottawa.ca\9999_username, where 9999 is a four-digit number and username will be the user name of the main researcher.
- If your computer is not joined to the uOttawa AD domain, you will be asked for your network credentials. Use your uoAccess credentials.
- You storage is now available

Connection to the storage for macOS on the wired network
To map the drive on your macOS Mojave computer connected to the wired network, follow these steps:
- Open Finder
- From the menu, select "Go"
- Click the menu item "Connect to Server..."
- In the Connect to Server dialog window, type "smb://storage.rdc.uottawa.ca/9999_username"", where 9999 is a four-digit number and username will be the user name of the main researcher.
- Click "Connect" and then again in the next dialog window
- If your computer is not joined to the uOttawa AD domain, you will be asked for your network credentials. Use your uoAccess credentials, but leave out the @uottawa.ca part.
- Enable the checkbox for "Remember this password in my keychain"
- You storage is now available

Connection to the storage for Linux on the wired network
There are two was to connect to the drive on Linux. You can use CIFS to access the share using your uoAccess credentials.
CIFS
To mount the drive using CIFS, you need to have the cifs-utils package installed. Then to mount, type
mount -t cifs -ousername=yourusername,domain=UOTTAWA \ //storage.rdc.uottawa.ca/9999_username /mnt/somewhere
It will ask you for your password.
Replace yourusername with your uoAccess credentials without the @uottawa.ca part. Replace 9999_username with the name of the share you received. Replace /mnt/somewhere with the location on your computer where you would like to mount the drive.
Connection to the storage on the wireless network
To use the share on the wireless network, you can use the web interface
- Go to https://storage.rdc.uottawa.ca/drive
- Log in using your uoAccess credentials without the @uottawa.ca part
